Spirits Of The Dead – “The Great God Pan” MP3/download
“The Great God Pan,” care of Oslo, Norway’s Spirits Of The Dead, took me for a long, delightful loop and I hope it does the same for you. There are all sorts of left-field influences bubbling up:
- The midsection of Devendra Banhart‘s “Seahorse”; almost note for note, in fact (so since he’s in here I might as well mention Feathers, Vetiver and Megapuss)
- several snatches of Dungen‘s multi-angled Swede-rock
- some strange mish-mash of Jeff Buckley‘s jammier moments and papa Tim Buckley‘s more jazz-infected projects/songs
- The Doors, because anytime a band does a shuffle of any sort I can only think of John Densmore and the gang
- My Morning Jacket, maybe? Yeah, you’re right — I got nothin’ else … (and I must say it feels good to have so few reference points to use as footholds; sometimes you gotta freeclimb)
And neither will you; don’t even try to decode this little nugget, lest you get trapped in an indie-rock/jazz-den/hippy-jam cocoon you can’t fight your way out of. We’ve lost some good critics that way …
