Lord knows this is probably my least-favorite Pinback song, but jesus CHRIST — my daughter’s name is Penelope so posting this tune for Daily MP3 number 200 (which should lead to a spontaneous celebration right? LET’S GET CRAZY) makes all the sense in the gol’-darn workd, dontchaknow.
Blue Screen Life, along with the self-titled full-length debut, was easily P-back’s moment in my brain of brains. It had it all — a puffed-up punchbag of an opening track, a slow, slinky, shuffling track or threeee and more melody layering than an a capella resurgence.
I never liked “Penelope” much though; easily the worst song on the album. In fact, I had to be reminded it was even a SONG a little while after Penny was born. I have a way of screening out forgettable cuts, to the point where albums like that first Who record don’t even register anymore (except for that one number called … crap, I can’t remember; something about degenerations?).
Such is my crass cross to bear, I suppose.
