How could I not have shared this chili pepper of a cover tune with you already (I mean, I shared Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood‘s original with you awhile back, remember?)? Well, it happens — things slip, people fade, life stands still … but don’t worry, I’m doing my best to fill in the cracks of your life, in this case with a spackle of Slowdive‘s cover of “Some Velvet Morning.”
I first heard this odd cut on a 7-inch procured from an antique shop in upstate New York; my wife and I started playing it acoustically and it never ceased to amaze me how fuckin’ WEIRD the song is right down to its core. How many famous folks of Sinatra’s ilk would ever mess with a collaborator as down-and-out-sounding as Hazelwood is an open question, but the fact that she did leaves artifacts such as “Some Velvet Morning” for all of us to enjoy.
I’ve read a lot recently about Hazelwood’s legend and he’s been covered more than a lot of cult artists, so be sure to seek that stuff out. For now though, soak in the hot, hi-low, surreal and indulgent mess that is Slowdive’s take on “Some Velvet Morning” and OPEN UP YOUR GATE already.
