I mentioned the other day how stupid (STUPID! ME SO STUPAAAAHD!) I felt for not having delved into the music of Crystal Stilts until just the other day (of course, I often purposely ignore the heavily hyped bands so that I may point y’alls toward the lesser-known goodness; still), and now I’m going to drop another bomb on yr asses: I just finally jumped aboard the Smith Westerns train last month after looking the other way for a few years as the hype swirled around like clouds of DEAth.
Now, I must humbly admit the important of Smith Westerns. It’s got it all if you’re a fan of modern garage-rock: A dead-on APE of T-Rex, a couple of slower songs with BIG, FAT build-ups that rouse you out of whatever couch-borne slumber you’ve found yourself trapped in and some less-enthralling, disappointingly standard garage-rock ditties that nonetheless perform their function well (i.e. fill in the gaps between out-and-out HITZ).
If you’ve been in the dark on this band, as I was for so, very long, it’s time to jump out of the shadows and into the LIGHEEEET!!! Don’t forget to spin “Gratisfaction” again just for kicks, too (a better Thin Lizzy ape you won’t find; OK, there are better Thin Lizzy apes but I’m happy with this one so BITE ME):
