Mystic Chords Of Memory – “Golden Dome” MP3/download
Seeing as yesterday I bliggety-BLESSED you with a fantastic Beachwood Sparks tune (“Drinkswater”) from a now-practically bygone era, I figured today, as I head out to check out this year’s South By Southwest Festival, that I’d let you in on a little secret: Mystic Chords Of Memory.
MCOM were begat when the Sparks broke up, and pretty much nobody paid attention. Which is sad, because the Chords, helmed by Chris Gunst, were every bit as good as the Sparks were (are? I believe they’ve reunited, though I’ve heard very little since the Sub Pop anniversary festival a few years back) and even more quirky/introspective/aMAZing.
Their one full-length record (they also recorded an album with instrumental hip-hop act Nobody, and it wasn’t that great) has remained one of my fondest college-radio artifacts … and now I share it with you!
As good as “Golden Dome” is, it’s far from the best Mystic Chords Of Memory cut. Be sure to buy the whole album so you can check out “Mongo & Arky” and several other gems that will never stop filling your heart with fuzz, love and fuzzy love.
Just to make sure things don’t get to cute around here: FUCK!
Goodbye now … see you in Austin!
