I am dead-tired today but I wanted to take a second to hip you to “Murderers,” one of the first tracks I ever downloaded in the AudioGalaxy era (god, that seems so long ago) and a solo John Frusciante tune that has consistently stayed with me, in particular because of its foresight, as bands like Ratatat, Hair_Loss, Lucky Dragons and several others have taken cues from it without really knowing it.
Solo Frusciante is, to say the last, an acquired taste not for the faint of studio mind-fuckery. Tracks like “My Smile is a Rifle” and “Big Takeover” are big on eccentricity and low on studio dynamics, having little or nothing to do with Frusc’s activities in the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
I’ve only met one person in Real, non-digital Life that even knew anything about Frusciante’s solo work without me showing it to him/her first: Adam Robillard, my bandmate in Duo Bomber. He’s the shit, obviously.
Hopefully, someday, I’ll also be able to locate “Running Away Into You,” but for now “Murderers” is nice to be able to bump on my tinny MacTop speakers …
