The split with Dave Smolen, apparently, was only half the story. Now, Hair_Loss jump onto my radar again with this self-titled fillet o’ freak, flippin’ and a-dippin’, maybe even rippin’, too. It’s on, now.
The Initial Everything’s Wonderful 12-inch is alternately spectacular and workmanlike — there are lulls, but never to the point where you want to flip the needle up and move on to another activity. It locks you in, fills your soul and slides around your spine like a microscopic roller coaster from hell.
As is my nature, I’ll start with Side B: Dentistry, slow-motion neon-rave beats, squiggles, the side of a ping-pong racket hitting the table, chopping a vegetable, Matmos, being drowned by a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robot, stuttering deep in a tear well, breakdancing in a deserted alley, Warp Records, running a drum machine through a delay pedal, running a squirrel through your dishwasher, needle hitting wax, Plaid, news-station static, digital THUMps, pogo sticks, Mixel Pixel, being chased by a cyborg, chasing a cyborg, beating a tough level, warping to the toughest level, leaving your face in the washing machine, going through a car wash without your car, chomping on a pretty flower, clouds of noise, computer prompts, toasted bagels ready NOW, white squall, forming a rhythm with a pencil and the bottom of a Mason jar, blac-

On to Side A: Cheetoh-puff fingers, Hollindagain, dead-end drone-top, four/floor, two dice rattling around in an empty parmesan cheese dispenser, a mythological warrior breathing unsteadily after a battle, pitch-bent slurs, a canyon at 2 a.m., the roller rink at 7 p.m., Daft Punk back when that maybe meant just a little, a 47-year-old man eating an apple, hitting the Return key, digitally manipulating something or someone, minimalism eating Kid606 alive like the langoliers, burbling bass slurry, high-hat hits, bent keys, undulating patterns, hot-pink type on black fabric, techno bowl, Aphex Twin‘s eternal conscience, a wizard’s snow-driven beard, riding a beat soft and then kicking it with your spurs and really TAKING OFF, ColecoVision, Speak ‘n’ Spell, Videohippos, memory cartridges, tough-guy toothpicks, smearing synths like beet-red lipstick, rapping on AM radio waves, double-dipping, echo, the sound of the sun rising, the gangsta shuffle, spinning the top, wetting the whistle, shaving the sherpa-
