Various artists - "I'll Be Home for Christmas" compilation ...

HEY! It’s been awhile; too long, really, so I’m going to get to the gravy (white, not brown, as is the custom in Texas): I’ve got a new, FREE-EE-EE compilation to proffer and I’m don’t care who knows it!

It’s called “I’ll be Hometapes for Christmas” and it includes new cutz from bands like Slaraffenland (check out their “Little Drummer Boy” MP3 via the player to the right —>), All Tiny Creatures (a nice new band whose cassette I’ve been meaning to mention), Pattern Is Movement (Gumshoe’s been acquainted with these guys, audio-wise, for awhile now), The Caribbean (speaking of acquainted, The ‘Bbean’s been around too) and Brad Laner (nope, I got nothin’), among others.

I’ve always had a crater-sized soft spot for Slaraffenland (in fact it’s more like a giant bruise; better get that checked out) and they don’t disappoint, turning “Drummer Boy” into an interesting tour through an audio snowglobe (or maybe an offering from the band Snowglobe) you’ll want to revisit.

Much like Sufjan Stevens‘ holiday fare over the last decade, Slaraffenland’s reinterpretation accentuates a tune I’ve always loved. Nothing drastic enough to change its mood, just enough to put their own stamp on the Christmas classic. Their knack for group harmonies comes in handy, as does their unique knack for dressing their tunes deftly.

All Tiny Creatures offer a bookish, Books-ish (if Books were melded with Caribou and jangled like sleigh bells) jaunt that goes on for 10 minutes, too, providing the other highlight I’ve chosen to draw attention to here. A shuffling beat, synth mega-sparkles, xylophone, sleigh ballz … yep, it’s all here, ripe for the pluckin’.

There are a ton of treasure-trove gems to be had on this comp, so check it out. As I write this I’m sitting in a hotel room in Corpus Christi, Texas, readying myself to move into a house I’m renting with my wife and small child. So, you know, I don’t have the time to really dig into this subject matter the way I’d like to. I just hope you trust me to bring the BACON like always once my moving chores are though.
