Tonstartssbandht, M. Pyers and Run DMT @ Art Lab in Fort Collins, Colorado [Curiosities #60]

This RULES. What's left to say?

It’s about that time folks — I’m finally going to an indie-rock show — the first since WestWord fest — tomorrow night, Sunday, and I don’t care if I have to take my daughter with me this time …

The show that’s got me all jazz-matazz-ed is the Tonstartssbandht/Run DMT/M. Pyres (the latter curators of the local Patient Sounds label) show in Fort Collins. After listening to T-bandht for so long it’s become terribly difficult for me to even imagine seeing them play live.

Can they pull of those fantastic brother-bear harmonies and turtle-shell drones? I can say without being overly full of praise that I had similar anticipation anxiety circa seeing Animal Collective for the first time last year in Boulder.

Tonstartssbandht are obviously not as huge as AC at this point but I honestly believe they can go as far as they want to go in this often-depressing indie-music muck-business.

On another topic, I must admit I’m pretty impressed by the people running the Art Lab in Fort Collins. Hell, I always have been, but sometimes onions befoul a perfectly good ointment.

Ya see, they kicked my wife’s paintings out for Tour De Fat (actually I’m just remembering now that I sort of had an ugly confrontation over this … I feel guilty in retrospect but I was feeling protective of my wife’s art) because some old-guy, landscape-mangling artist had a hissy fit (“IT’S MY ART GALLERY, I WON’T SHARE IT!!!” is pretty much what we were told was his view of things), but it wasn’t really their fault anyway and they just keep KRANKin’, delivering community art for the more intricate of us.

We had a great time at the Art Lab, too. Caro got to display her paintings, I got to spin some records and we even performed a show together as an acoustic duo (I hope it wasn’t as lame as it sounds). We’re called Cookeddd Booksss.

Anyway, I’m kind of pissed off because I just got a haircut for a job interview and it hasn’t quite, shall we say, settled in yet. I’m sure I’m going to look nice and THIRTY-SOMETHING at the show; just please jehova don’t let me be the eldest attendee.

And if I am, let me not look like one of Those Guys. I suppose if I’m even thinking this way I’m already one of Those Guys, but I’d like to think that, because I keep my finger on the pulse, I somehow offset the fact that I am a post-college guy long removed from multi-roommate apartments and all the attendant pleasures that go with being in the much-coveted early twenties age bracket.

I’m also hoping that, because I’m actually putting out some of Tonstartssbandht’s music, I will be awarded a pass of sorts.

I deserve one, I swear.
