I’ve had to take a 2-day break from the Grove for myriad reasons. First(ly), I’m getting really close to finally finding a job, and that has drained time from my hands.

Second(…ly), I’m working on a super-intensive project — which is tangentially related to this blog; an announcement is coming soon — that has turned out to have giant, throbbing, time-sucking teeth (which have been sunk into my neck for the last few months).

Third, I have a 2-year-old baby. ‘Nuff said, right?

Right. I DO, however, have some goodies for you, discovered during my brief sojourn from blog-posting.

The first few come from an album that has been absolutely HOOKing me for weeks now: Mason Lindhal‘s Serrated Man Sound. Mt. Eerie and John Fahey; that’s all I have to say (and that’s all I NEED to say, MAN).

I also just made a few record-store purchases — because, you know, it’s good to have them — among them Fuck Buttons‘ Record Store Day single “Olympians.”

To be honest, it was an impulse buy. I’d still never heard them and it’s usually a policy of mine to hear something before dropping absolute TRAU on it. I knew “Oly” was Out Of Print (OOP) as hell, that didn’t hurt.

In retrospect I think the gods were shining on me that day, because I really dig this group. One of the first Ratatat-ish instrumental-prog groups — though Eff Buttons use synths rather than guitars and, likely, guitar-synths — to hit me the right way in a long while.

Very soulful. Patriotic almost, but I never look too deeply into music (musicians laugh at that shit, you know that right?) that has no words … it’s best to trust the groove.

Did I mention J. Spaceman (Spiritualized, Spacemen 3) and Alan Vega (Suicide) have a remix track each on Side biggity-Bizzee? They do, and I’m popping them right … ahhhhh now.

They melt in my mouth like buttah, Spaceman’s re-up all languid and opium-like (though I’ve never tried opium). Dream-y like “Ladies and Gentleman” but even more cocoon-like in its pleasures. He’s got it down; no need to comment further.

Vega’s on here too, and he’s been doing the rounds. It’s no surprise. I am taken aback, however, by how little AV’s mix does for me. Totally, totally, TOTally serviceable, but not exactly what I’m lookin’ fer these days. Slashing, though.

Done.
