Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – “Among Dreams” MP3/download
Ariel Pink – “Immune to Emotion” MP3/download
One quick shot to fulfill my Daily MP3 requirements: “Among Dreams” by Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, from The Doldrums on Paw Tracks Records (Pink was initially discovered by Animal Collective members).
Now that everyone is finally admitting Pink’s influence I feel it’s time to start diving back into the guy’s insane-O discography again (as well as bragging about the fact that I new Pink was a genius all along; so many made fun of me for listening to him and AC back in the day!).
Not to mention that a bunch of “chillwave” bands (Kurt Vile, Ducktails, Blues Control) sound like Pink, albeit in different ways
I interviewed him a few years ago, and I’m gonna dig that up, too. One of the best interviews I’ve ever done (move over, Panda Bear!).
“Among Dreams” is the perfect Pink song. None of his limitations come into play, nor do his idiosyncrasies muddle the message. And the soprano singing, the mouth-beats, the two-string guitar playing?
Shit, that’s just Pink. Get onboard … Lyrics below …
“Among Dreams” lyrics:
Among dreams, we’re best friends
While in life we float apart
You fell asleep but you won’t admit you love me
Though it’s precisely in your dream
I’m livin’ to love you
Oh, to be wide awake beside you
Please don’t hurt me
Please don’t watch me
Please believe me
Please don’t judge me
Please don’t hate me
The misuse of your best
Among dreams, we talk of they
While in life they talk of me
To you I’m a pathetic face
but you know it’s the truth
cos in your dream I’ve known you
forever
now it’s not my dream to remember
Please don’t touch me
Please don’t want me
Please be near me
Please don’t scare me
Please don’t leave me
Among dreams, I dream to be
You would have loved to love me
You’ll never see that you won’t admit you love me
Though it’s precisely in your dreams
to love you
forever
no it’s not my dream to remember
oh to be wide awake beside you

lovin’ the post. he isn’t noted for his lyrics enough, which i find fantastic. i was introduced to pink at a perfect time, in 07 about a year before his style was jacked by, admittedly about all of my favorite bands since then. still, no one can reproduce his work.
i was just spinning the new woods 7” i was gone, which gets a little pink-y.
would love to read that interview!
i’m totally going to whip out that interview … there was even a bunch of stuff the mag didn’t publish … damn maybe i should just publish the sound file of the interview, i’ve been waiting to try that.
I had a MILLION chances to buy The Doldrums on vinyl. it kills me how much that lp goes for today.
how’s the station?
station is doing great. the real estate record is one of the most popular right now, and rightfully so. i would like to see surfer blood and local natives (snoooooozze) replaced with stuff like moon duo and strange boys, but toeachizown i guess.
ooh, Strange Boys are indeed tantalizing, they didn’t at all sound like I thought they would. still haven’t heard Local Natives but the band name itself is so … man it sort of says it all.
Glad to hear you’re into the new Moon Duo record, that thing totally ROCKED my world/is rocking my world. definitely apart from most of the other Goner/Woodsist/Capture Tracks stuff (though I like that stuff too, snarff) …
What do you think of Real Estate? I listened to it once and sorta lost interest …
y’know, i did the same with it. then i listened to that alex bleeker and the freaks record (ducktails + real estate) and liked that so much that i gave real estate another shot and it grew on me pretty quickly. its very good, but i don’t think it has a whole ton a lasting appeal. in fact, i’m already getting tired of this whole suft/beach bullshit trend. i mean, these dudes are from jersey.
moon duo is the best thing woodsist has put out in a minute. i wasn’t expecting to like it this much cuz wooden shjips gets kinda of boring for me. escape has the same repetitive/droning nature, but they know how to do it right. somehow its more exciting.
local natives represents the bad side of this “indie” evolution. “maltstream” or whatever you want to call it. but more of these bands are popping up at the station. these manufactured, carbon copy “indie” bands for tweens and girls who think they’re cute. i just can’t support that kind of shit. no heart, y’know?
alex beeker and the freaks? jesus, i didn’t even know of their existence, i’ll have to look that up. i guess real estate didn’t jump out at me but i should mention i got it in the mail, listened to it ONCE, and that’s it. i can’t even remember what it sounds like anymore so i really need to give that — and the Mayfair Set record — another listen.
did you say you’ve seen moon duo live? it’d be interesting to see if two people can pull off all the stuff going on in that record … so dense and yes, just about the perfect way to go about the wooden shjips-ish sound … and why is it I always confuse Holy Mountain with Wooden Shjips? it’s not like the names are identical or anything.
ok, so I have your permission to just skip Local Natives? that band name in itself bugs the SHIT out of me, how many bands are going to try to hint at an Animal Collective-ish sound with their band name? I was ok with Our Brother The Native but it’s just getting ridiculous with the animal/forest/native/etc. names. i say when you get those ones just don’t even add them, just hide them and hope no one finds them, haha

yeah, its a very good record. bleeker is the bassist of real estate, he sings and plays guitar here. the lead guitar parts are tantalizing, i think its matt mondale (ducktails) and the real estate guitarist. neil young crazyhorse vibe big time. these dudes know there way around blues scales. i love to that brought back to life.
mayfair set was over-looked a bit. i mean, i’m a blank dogs fan boy so, bias there. but he just goes too perfectly with the dum dum girl. just heard of a new blank dogs ep out on captured tracks next month, a song off of it is up on the myspace. sounds like the cure big time.
no, i missed moon duo, they played seattle last week. i wonder what it was like. it sounds like they rely on drum machines, so that would be rad to see.
oh my god, yeah skip the shit out of that band. totally with you on these band names. shit. i refuse to listen to these trendy, blogged-about bands named (insert color) + (insert animal) with an album cover that suggests a nature hike. these bands need to quit trying to be all conceptual. only great bands can pull that off after years of work…i.e. AnCo.
yes, that’s the thing people forget about Animal Collective; they did the work, they deserve to be where they are and if they would have been hyped TOO much over the first few years they might not have made it to where they are in the first place.
i’m a total blank dogs Believer too, i think “under and under” is fantastic and though that’s really all i have on vinyl of his i always check out his 12″ and 7″ online. usually people bid the SHIT out of those though.
how about ducktails? you into that? between them and Blues Control i feel like i want to bail out on this “chillwave” thing. it seems so aimless sometimes. give me Sun Araw or Wet Hair …
You’re a meat head.
better than a dickhead?
