CHECK OUT GUMSHOE’S BALLOT FOR THE 2009 “PAZZ & JOP” POLL RIGHT HERE!!!
I’ve managed to parlay my music-reviewing prowess into a few comforts not enjoyed by the Many. For one, I get into concerts free, or at least most concerts.
Secondly, I get a lot of CDs/vinyl in the mail to partake. Finally, every once in awhile I manage to make a little cash from it.
Now that I’ve been selected to participate in the Village Voice’s “Pazz & Jop” poll, however, the preceding comforts mean very little. I mean, THE VILLAGE VOICE people! To even have my name on their site for a few days is a huge honor.
They asked me to compile a list of my Top-10 albums and singles of 2009. I tweaked my Top-25 a bit (putting the indie-as-SHIT bands up-top) and sent that in, then set out to compile my favorite singles.
It was tougher than I thought. There were at least four or five Fresh & Onlys songs ALONE that could’ve made it. Somehow I managed to whittle it down and send it in.
Interestingly, I was the only one, out of almost a thousand reviewers across the country, to vote for bands like Tonestartssbandht, Sylvester Anfang II, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Gay Beast in the “Albums” category.
I also noticed that my singles were all exclusively my picks, save Dan Deacon‘s “Wet Wings,” which received ONE other vote (from one David Downs, a no-doubt talented man). That means “Official,” ”Delusion of Man,” the Locrian/Harpoon split, Thee Oh Sees/Ty Segall split, “Microwave Mayo” and many, many more, weren’t chosen by a single other review.
That’s what I like to see, truth be told. Stay tuned in 2010 for more coverage no one else will vote for in ’10 year-end polls …
