- Reigning Sound singer Greg Cartwright gets down.
- The Reigning Sound – “Love and Curses” – In the Red Records
- A gang of toughs, no doubt.
I don’t know how the EFF this happened, but somehow I never got around to reviewing The Reigning Sound‘s Love and Curses album (listen to “Stick Up for Me,” one of the best cuts, below), on In the Red Records.
I’ll admit I was late to catch the bus on these guys. They’ve been releasing stuff for years, and singer Greg Cartwright is an ex member of The Oblivians, Detroit Cobras, Compulsive Gamblers and 68 Comeback. Jesus Christ!
It’s obvious when you listen to Love and Curses, though, that this is the work of an experienced songsmith with more song-notches on his belt than whiskers on his chin (and that’s a LOT, man!).
Running the gamut from songs about mental wars with the male penis — at least that’s what I THINK “Brake It” is about — songs about government (“Somebody better stand up for me, yeah!”) and songs about the lingering “debris” of an ex.
“Broken Things” is particularly genius in its combination of garage riffs and more traditional roots-rock fare that would be off-putting were it not surrounded by such cunning bridges.
They’ll always play second fuck-fiddle to groups like Fresh & Onlys, Thee Oh Sees, The Black Time, Intelligence and many other, far more post-modern, groups, but The Reigning Sound are a group I’m thankful to have discovered (or, actually, to have been mailed their album).
SPEED ROUND COMPLETED! What’s next, shit …
The Reigning Sound – “Stick Up for Me”
