The Net never ceases to amaze me. Right now, right the-fuck HERE, you can watch a the great intro to Dig!, perhaps my favorite rock-star documentary movie of all-time (move over, Don’t Look Back). (WATCH THE ENTIRE MOVIE HERE, split into several chapters; cool!)
The kids have it so easy these days. It used to be IMPOSSIBLE to find this flick when it first came out, at least if you relied on Blockbuster. I had to Netflix it, in any event.
Point is, this movie — about the on- and off-stage antics of The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols – will change the way you look at backstage rock ‘n’ roll politics. This is as real as it gets, and even more outrageous. Maybe some will even realize how close playing in a band is to having a Real Job.
Bar-room brawls, baiting song lyrics, blown band funds, expensive MTV music-video sets, arguments, stodgy storage-spaces-turned-live-ins in Portland, drugs, super-long road trips, drug busts, betrayed trusts, narcissism, leaching, agents, record-label execs, A&R men; it’s all here people, and it’s REAL.
If you’ve ever longed to believe in the Blur/Oasis rivalry, watch Dig! instead. Sometimes truth is better than reality.
I’ve already seen this movie, literally, 20 times at least, so I’m going to refrain, but rest assured you will gobble up every minute of this flick. Let me know how it turns out; I’ve recommended this before and drawn blank stares and disapproving glances.
