As douche-y as many of Vampire Weekend‘s listeners are, you’re a bigger douche if you refuse to Listen. Say what you will, but Vampire Weekend’s debut album was a nearly perfect distillation of Paul Simon samba-sucking afro grooves, Walkmen-style shimmering indie-rock, a few other World persuasions I won’t pretend to know much about, twee and some old ska band I haven’t thought about in years.
Now that the “other” VW have announced a new album, to drop in January, expectations/stress for the sophomore effort from one of rock’s most college-oriented bands might even dwarf Finals Week.
AND GUESS WHAT? YOU CAN DOWNLOAD (FOR FREE!) “HORCHATA,” A BRAND-NEW TRACK FROM VAMPIRE WEEKEND’S UPCOMING ALBUM CONTRA RIGHT HERE!!!
I’ve GOT to be one of the first to post this; the little countdown set up for today ended about 30 seconds ago. Anyway, I’m listening to the new Vampire Weekend song and I must say, I’m surprised as FUCK.
This is a very quaint, very The Boy Least Likely To track, timid to the point of non-approach and scared to even say “hi.” Quite a break from the bombastic shuffle-stomp of tunes like “Boston” and “Mansard Roof.”
I liked “Horchata” for about 5 minutes, but it has little depth to it. These guys, whether they’re rich, douche-y, too smart or whatever insult you wanna lump on them, know how to write catchy songs that have STOOPID written all over them. Very blip- and bloop-filled, too, which is fine (even Sufjan is doing that these days).
So yeah: Another day, another discovery! Gumshoe is alive and well …
