Fresh and Onlys, Thee Oh Sees on Monday night!!! [G-Rant #8]

I almost forgot, what with all the Monolith Festival buzz blighting my brain, that Fresh and Onlys and Thee Oh Sees are playing in Denver on Monday night, and yours truly will be there, front and center.

It looks like the Grove will get the exclusive coverage too, so expect a shitload of photos and words on Tuesday.

I’ve been waiting for what seems like forever to see Thee Oh Sees, and if you count Coachwhips and Pink & Brown (two bands that preceded Thee Oh Sees/OCS) it’s even longer. Straight up, they’re one of my favorite bands of the last 5 years, period, and their cult dominance will expand soon enough.

Along with Blank Dogs, Thee Oh Sees are perhaps the most consistently productive AND surprising of the new wave of junk-punk rockers like Ty Segall, Intelligence, Black Time, Black Lips, Jay Reatard, Times New Viking and …

You guessed it: The Fresh and Onlys. Their latest, Grey-Eyed Girls, has been in CONSTANT rotation in my stereo, and if you knew how many CDs/LPs came and went during the course of a typical week at the Gumshoe abode you’d know how tough it is to get into regular rotation.

Grey-Eyed Girls demands attention, though. Tunes like “Delusion of Man” and “I’m Gonna Be Your Elevator” (the latter a sweet Fallen Idols take-off) are both catchy and barbell-heavy, and the rest of the album cycles through enough styles — all within a reasonable range — to give guitar-heavy rock yet another face.

So yeah: Get ready, motherfuckers.
